Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES: Conducts research in biogeochemistry and ecology of ocean acidification and ocean warming specifically in the Main Hawaiian Islands, with a specific focus on (1) meta-analysis of ocean acidification and warming impacts on all marine organisms of tropical coastal ecosystems, and (2) development of sensitivity scalars for these organisms, including uncertainties, that will feed into a large ecosystem model. Works collaboratively to ascertain analysis meets the ecosystem model needs, and co-authors synthetic documents, manuscripts, and/or scientific presentations.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Marine Ecosystem Sciences, or Fisheries Sciences. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience working in biogeochemistry and ecological aspects of ocean acidification and ocean warming. Experience conducting oceanographic and ecological data analyses, such as, time-series analyses, inter-disciplinary modeling techniques, and other procedures commonly used by practitioners. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Strong knowledge of statistical procedures to perform spatial and time-series data analyses. Knowledge of ocean acidification and ocean warming processes and impacts to nearshore marine ecosms. Must beyste able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Excellent analytical skills and ability to work with large data sets. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawaii's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: PhD from an accredited college or university in Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Marine Ecosystem Sciences, or Fisheries Sciences. Previous experience in conducting meta-analysis. Demonstrated competence in data analysis for large data sets and development of analytical scripts (e.g., R, Matlab). Previous authorship or co-authorship of publications in a related field of study.
